LHF Camp Bayou Bruisers (Tidal Wave)

Camp Bayou Bruisers (Tidal Wave Retreat) is an annual summer camp for children with bleeding disorders and their immediate families. Our medical staff works day in and day out to ensure the children are having the best time while staying safe! Thank you to Louisiana Hemophilia Foundation for hosting an amazing camp!

A new treatment that helps people with hemophilia A maintain higher levels of a crucial blood clotting factor with fewer treatments is a victory for patients, writes Dr. Cindy Leissinger in an editorial for The New England Journal of Medicine. Dr. Leissinger is the director of the Louisiana Center for Bleeding and Clotting Disorders and a professor of medicine at Tulane.

Chancellor Donald, MD Receives 2022 Exemplary Service Award

Our very own Chancellor Donald, MD along with a few of his peers are being honored by the American Society of Hematology (ASH) with the 2022 Exemplary Service Award. ASH is the largest organization devoted to equitable high-quality care, to improve the lives of patients with blood and bone marrow disorders.

The Exemplary Service Award was established in 1998 to recognize individuals whose outstanding service has significantly advanced the interests of ASH.

This award specifically recognizes Dr. Donald and his peers for their “extensive contributions to the COVID-19 content curation group to ensure that the hematology community had access to the most trustworthy and up-to-date resources in the rapidly evolving pandemic environment.”

This award will be presented during ASH’s 64th Annual Meeting and Exposition in New Orleans, Louisiana, this December.

Sickle Cell Rock n' Bowl Event for Sickle Cell Awareness Month

The Sickle Cell Center of Southern Louisiana (SCCSL) hosted its annual Rock n Bowl community event for the sickle cell community earlier this month. Patients and the SCCSL medical staff gathered together for a day of fellowship and fun. SCCL serves patients of all ages, helping people with sickle cell disease live longer, healthier lives.

Sickle Cell Awareness Month

September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month, and the School of Medicine is home to a center that serves the sickle cell community. The Sickle Cell Center of Southern Louisiana (SCCSL) provides comprehensive care for patients with sickle cell disease from birth into adulthood.

While the life expectancy of someone with sickle cell disease was estimated to be in their 20s in the 1970s, we now take care of individuals well into their 60s and beyond. Click here to learn more.

National Hemophilia Foundation (NHF) honors key healthcare workers at Tulane University

Each year, the National Hemophilia Foundation (NHF) honors those who have made significant contributions to the inheritable blood and bleeding disorders (IBD) community at its annual Awards of Excellence program. The 2022 winners were selected and announced over the weekend at the Bleeding Disorders Conference (BDC) in Houston, Texas. Among those honored were Constance “Connie” Thibodeaux, Social Worker of the year and Anita Wood, PT, Physical Therapist of the Year from the Louisiana Center for Bleeding and Clotting Disorders at Tulane University. Thank you to the National Hemophilia Foundation for these recognitions and their support.
